Quickly and easily characterizes custom applications and creates application scripts for IxChariot and Ixia hardware for line-speed replay

Overview

As part of the IxChariot product family, IxProfile is a dedicated application to import captured data traffic, analyze it and then creating traffic generation scripts and streams for replay across any wired and wireless network. It provides a comprehensive solution to test networks running proprietary applications by allowing the user to import protocol analyzer trace files capturing a single or multiple TCP client/server transactions as well as UDP and RTP streams, and then to scale the imported data types to represent hundred of thousands of users loading a 10Gbit/s network. Running natively on client or server hosts, IxProfile is also capable of directly generating traffic generation scripts by tracing any application that uses the WinSock API.

IxChariot uses Application Scripts to measure end-to-end network performance-the response time and throughput of application transactions across the network.

Ixia provides a library of free, pre-defined scripts that you can easily, extensively customize to reflect the unique character of application traffic on your network. Application Scanner lets you automatically create scripts for any custom or commercial application without having to understand the scripting language.

Key Benefits

Modern networks are stressed by tens of thousands of different voice, video and data applications, many of which are proprietary to Fortune 1000 companies and government agencies that rely on them to solve mission-critical problems. These applications can cause significant headaches for network equipment manufacturers trying to determine the performance of their equipment prior to deploying it in the customer's networks. In addition, many service providers offering service level agreements (SLA) to these organizations need to provide concrete performance measurements proving the capabilities of their networks to support these complex, proprietary applications.

IxProfile addresses these issues by allowing you to:

• Generate IxChariot scripts (.scr files) from application trace or network trace files. You can embed application payload data into the scripts and generate streaming (multimedia) scripts from network trace files. The timing delays contained in the source trace file can be preserved.
• Generate IxChariot application group definitions (.iag files) from application trace or network trace files. You can embed application payload data into the scripts and preserve the timing delays contained in the source trace file.
• Generate Ixia hardware stream files (.sdf files) from network trace files.

The application scripts that you generate supplement the standard IxChariot library of predefined scripts. In general, you can use IxProfile to increase the accuracy of active monitoring on your network, particularly in cases where a custom application differs in unique ways from the predefined scripts. For example, if you want to emulate the impact on your network of a custom-developed accounting program, IxProfile can generate a script that mirrors the API calls the accounting program is making. IxProfile eliminates the need to understand the scripting language.

Technical Features

• Enables you to select a single application stream from a line trace, create a script for that stream and edit the script as required
• Allows you to combine multiple streams into a single script
• Loads line trace files that contain IPv6 network traffic, and generates Ixia stream definitions corresponding to the IPv6 traffic
• Generates IxChariot scripts that include large payload files

IxProfile can trace and create scripts for multiple streams within the same application.
