Apple, Samsung Devices Seen Raising Pentagon’s Cyber Risk The Pentagon risks exposing itself to hackers by opening its communications networks to Apple Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co. smartphones and tablets, according to cyber security officials. The Pentagon's plan would eventually give employees the flexibility of connecting devices such as Samsung Galaxy S4 smartphones and Apple iPads to unclassified networks. It also would create more vulnerabilities to cybersecurity breaches, said Pat McGarry, principal systems engineer at Ixia, a network security company based in Calabasas, California.... Wireless Witch: DIY Wireless Extenders Put to the Test Any time I review a wireless extender, some reader typically leaves a comment about just making a homemade extender to avoid paying for one. I finally decided to build my own wireless extender and compare its benchmark results to those of "store-bought" ones. The results? As you'll see, they were bit of a mixed bag, but it's definitely an interesting DIY project. Samara Lynn tests DIY wireless extenders using Ixia's IxChariot to test throughput.... Network testing big at RSA Distributed throughout the exposition hall at this year’s RSA conference are more than a handful of companies that offer no solution to fix a client’s security posture, but instead offer a wide range of tools to help companies test their security and learn to respond to threats. “Testing people, that’s a big part of the equation that many overlook,” said Scott Register of Ixia, one of the network-testing companies presenting at RSA. "In the real world environment, it’s not about detecting the attack, it’s about how people respond to the attack."... FEDERAL TIMES - March 01, 2013 |

Ixia models attacks on your systems so you can test your defenses We can all take a lesson from NASA. When the space agency is planning an extravehicular activity (EVA) on any of its missions, the astronauts and support engineers practice the entire activity here on Earth. Numerous hours of practice allow the team to work out any kinks and prepare for unplanned scenarios. Being well trained and well prepared vastly increases the likelihood of mission success. Let's take this lesson into the enterprise. Ixia helps organizations get the answers by enabling them to model a range of attack or configuration scenarios in a safe environment. Ixia's network security products are chassis-based devices that the IT team can use to do things like model the life cycle of DDoS attack scenarios; rigorously evaluate firewalls, routers and IPSs; or model the effects of configuration changes of any Web facing device.... RSA: We Are Living in a 'Cyber Warm War' Two of the most talked about events at this year's RSA conference were the executive order from the President to increase cyber security in the U.S., and the report from Mandiant, which traced hacker activity to within China. Ixia's director for market strategy Scott Register said, "All out cyberwar is unlikely because it's not in [the attacker's] interest to be that overt," citing that much more damage and valuable information is usually extracted over long periods of time by subtle, persistent attacks. This is an area Ixia knows quite well, as it models various kinds of cyberattacks for companies and governments in order to test their defenses and better train their staff.... Ixia Puts Diameter, Lync and Wi-Fi to the Test Carrier-class Wi-Fi, Diameter, and Microsoft Lync are all hot topics in the networking world today, and this week at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona test company Ixia is addressing all of the above. Ixia has expanded its Wi-Fi access point and controller test solution to also test endpoints such as medical devices, printers, scanners, smartphones and tablets. Ixia this week also is unveiling an enhancement to its flagship product, IxLoad, to test all Diameter-type devices involved in the control plane/signaling plane. On a separate front, Microsoft last week announced it has selected Ixia as a partner for qualifying Lync over Wi-Fi. Zeto explains that there are tremendous issues with running real-time communications over Wi-Fi, so Microsoft now feels the need to qualify Wi-Fi access points to ensure they work well for Lync....
