IxLoad: Peer to peer

Peer-to-Peer (P2P)

Peer-to-peer (P2P) technology enables the sharing of computer resources and services, including information, files, processing cycles, and storage by means of direct exchanges between participants in a P2P network. As a result, P2P networking is a very efficient and resilient method for distributing content over IP networks.

P2P applications have multiplied and evolved to represent a formidable component of Internet traffic. IDC reports that P2P usage for 2006 was over 32% of all Internet traffic1. However, the mass popularity and bandwidth-hungry nature of P2P are threatening to exhaust service providers' network resources and the QoE of revenue generating real-time services such as video and voice.

P2P and voice, video and data traffic

Devices that forward the real world of Internet traffic need to be tested with a mix of P2P and voice, video and data traffic. Using this mix of traffic, NEMs, service providers and enterprises can ensure that their networks and devices properly recognize and prioritize recreational P2P traffic.

IxLoad combines advanced stateful P2P application-replay capabilities and an extensive library of P2P signatures to simulate P2P protocol behavior at scale.

IxLoad is used to:
  • Benchmark the performance of application-aware deep packet inspection (DPI) capable devices
  • Validate scalability of sophisticated P2P bandwidth management and QoS schemes
  • Determine the performance impact of P2P on multiplay service delivery
  • Verify the accuracy of the classification mechanisms in DPI devices

Features

  • Realistic P2P protocol simulation
  • Extensive library of predefined P2P traffic flows
  • Supports detailed measurement statistics and real-time graphs
  • Scales to thousands of peers, generating 800 Mbps of P2P traffic per Gigabit Ethernet port
IP Support IPv4 and IPv6
Emulation Initiator Peer, Responder Peer or Both
Protocols BitTorrent and eDonkey
Options
  • Choose from a library of P2P flow definitions for each protocol
  • Each traffic flow defines traffic with a different set of properties, such as the direction (upload, download or bidirectional to download), the amount of data transferred, the data size unit, and other properties.
Objectives
  • Number of peers
  • Throughput
  • Concurrent connections
  • Connections per second
  • Transactions per second
