Wireless carriers are aggressively rolling out new 4G LTE services. As part of this transition, they are replacing traditional TDM backhaul connections with more cost efficient packet-based connections that use Ethernet.

A key challenge in this transition is meeting the stringent synchronization requirements of the wireless base stations. Two leading protocols that can meet these requirements are 1588v2/PTP and Synchronous Ethernet (SyncE). Precise clock synchronization has many applications beyond mobile backhaul, including financial networks, smart grid, and industrial automation
