What types of licenses do Ixia applications use?

Ixia has three different types of licenses:

Temporary License:  This license is triggered by the application when it either cannot find an existing license, or when it cannot validate licensing due to connectivity issues.  A 2 day temporary license is issued when the licensing process between the client and chassis cannot be completed, or a 30 day temporary license will be issued when connectivity is fine, but a license does not exist. Temporary licenses require minimal information to be submitted. Submitting the required information for a temporary license is not the same as requesting a permanent license. Since these licenses are triggered by the application, no registration number or password is required.

Evaluation License: This licensed is issued by Ixia for a limited time period and requires a registration number and password. It used when evaluating an Ixia application and can be requested through your Ixia Sales Representative. The Ixia Registration Utility (IRU) is used to obtain an evaluation license.

Permanent License: This license does not expire and is issued by Ixia once entitlement has been verified.  The registration number and password to obtain this license is sent from licensing@ixiacom.com.  The IRU is used to obtain this license once you have received your registration number and password.  This license entitles you to use a particular version of software indefinitely.  However you will not be able to upgrade that application unless you are under maintenance.

I've purchased my Ixia software. How do I get my permanent license?

When your Ixia purchase is shipped, a registration letter is automatically emailed to the end-user listed on your purchase order. The letter contains a registration number and password, along with instructions on how to install the permanent license. If you cannot locate your registration letter when your software arrives, you may use the temporary license.

How is a permanent license installed?

Follow the instructions in the registration letter. You will use the Ixia Registration Utility (IRU) either from your Ixia chassis or another computer. Choose the Registration choice and then the Start button. Follow the instructions of the Registration Wizard.

How are licenses associated with Ixia chassis and other computer?

Ixia products use different types of licenses:

a) Chassis locked – the license is applied to an Ixia chassis and may only be used with that chassis. Any number of application users may use ports on that chassis. This type of license is used by the following applications:
  • IxAccess
  • IxAuthenticate
  • IxAutomate
  • IxNetwork
  • IxOS
  • IxRouter
  • IxVoice
  • IxVPN
  • IxLoad
b) Client locked – the license is applied to a host computer and may only be used with that computer. Only one user is allowed to use that application on a particular computer. The application usage is usually restricted to a particular quantity. For example, IxChariot licenses are for a particular number of endpoint pairs. This type of license is used by the following applications:
  • IxANVL
  • IxChariot
  • IxProfile

c) Floating license – this type of license is shared by a number of application users. Any number of users share a particular quantity of application usage. For example, IxChariot endpoints. The clients must stay connected to the license server. This type of license is used by the following applications:

  • IxANVL
  • IxChariot

What is the IRU?

The Ixia Registration Utility (IRU) is a utility which is installed along with all licensed applications. The IRU can be used to register, de-register, update and manage licenses. It is also where the diagnostic tool is located.  You can launch the IRU by going to "Start" --> "Programs" --> "Ixia" and selecting "IRU" under the "licensing" option.

Installation

Where do I install my software?

For all Ixia software applications that use a chassis-locked license, it is important that you install the application on the Ixia chassis as well as on any client computers that you will be using. This will cause the licensing software to be installed on the chassis.

When I installed on my chassis, I received a message that says “In order for Ixia licensing software to work correctly …” What is this about?

An important, one-time, change is necessary. This change will require that all current licenses be re-registered. If you are connected to the Internet, after the chassis reboots an automatic utility will reregister all these licenses. If you are not connected to the Internet, an offline technique will be required; see below. If you have installed other licensed applications on your chassis, they might stop working and will need to be re-licensed.

What happens after the reboot if I'm not connected to the Internet?

If you are connected to the Internet, after the chassis reboots an automatic utility will reregister all these licenses. If you are not connected to the Internet, an offline technique will be required. Follow these steps using the IRU (Start » Ixia » Licensing » IRU):
  1. Use the Manage Licenses choice to identify all of the licenses on the chassis.
  2. For each,
    a. Find your original registration email.
    b. Deregister the license using the Deregister function.
    c. Register the license using the Register function.
See the Off-Line Autoupdate Procedure document.

Temporary Licenses

When using an application for the first time with a particular chassis, I receive a "License management software could not be found" message. What does this mean?

The message will be "License management software (noded or lmgrd) could not be found". This indicates that there is a network problem related to licensing. You will be offered a temporary license, but it will only be good for 2 days. Refer to the FAQ section related to troubleshooting.

After installing a 2 day temporary license on my client PC, I am offered a multi-week temporary license. What happened?

This is good news; you've solved your problem with respect to connection to the chassis. The initial 2 day license was offered due to a problem communicating with license software on the chassis.

[ top of page ]

Can I install another temporary license when my current one expires?

No. Only one temporary license is allowed per product and version. If you update to a new version, another temporary license will be offered.

License Server

What is a license server?

As an alternative to placing each application license on each chassis, you may locate the licenses on a central license server. We suggest that you consider the use of a license server if you have more than 10 Ixia chassis to maintain. You must install the licensing software on this server from the Ixia SupportDownloads and Updates web page. Licenses are installed on the server through the use of the IRU. While the server does not necessarily have to have connectivity to the Internet, it must have connectivity to the chassis and client PCs which will run the applications. Each application must be told the name of the license server that you will be using. See the FAQ section for each application to learn how to do this.

IxAuthenticate

Does IxAuthenticate 2.00 work with other applications?

IxAuthenticate 2.00 includes and uses version 1.20 of Ixia licensing software, which is incompatible with all other versions of licensing. It must be used exclusively on a chassis and its client(s).

Miscellaneous

What happens to my licensed applications if I have to RMA my chassis?

If possible you should deregister all licenses using the IRU before shipping the chassis to Ixia. If you cannot complete this for some reason then please let Ixia support know this when returning your chassis. They will need to know the registration numbers for each application licensed to the chassis.

Troubleshooting

I can't seem to install a license from my computer. What might the problem be?

Check the following:
a. Ensure that your application has been installed on the chassis. That will install the required licensing software.
b. Check the Licensing – Proxy Settings respect to Internet Explorer proxy settings.
c. Try using the IRU from the chassis to install the license.

When I attempt to run my application, I see a 5504 error.

This might be due to:
a) Lack of connection to your chassis. Use a cmd window and ping to verify the connection.
b) Lack of connection to the licensing software on the chassis. This might be due to:
i) Licensing software not installed on the chassis.
ii) A proxy setting in Internet Explorer that is blocking the connection. See the Licensing – Proxy Settings document.
c) Some other problem. Please call Ixia Support.

I know a license is installed, but it cannot be found by the application. What could the problems be?

This might be due to:
a) You may not have updated your license to the latest version using the IRU's Update function. See the General section of this FAQ.
b) You updated the license, but the maintenance period of the license had expired and the license version could not be updated. Send email to renewals@ixiacom.com. See the General section of this FAQ.
c) Your client PC is far from your chassis or license server such that the round trip time is too long. You can experiment with longer timeouts by setting the FLEXLM_TIMEOUT environment variable to a larger value. It works in units of microseconds. For example, a value of 1000000 is one second and should be sufficient for most connections. Make sure to restart your application after setting this variable.

If I install an application on my client PC which already has IxChariot installed, which version of licensing will be used?

If you install an application with a newer version of licensing, then that will override the current version of licensing. However, if an application using an older version is installed, then licensing will use the more current of the two. Except for version 2.00 of licensing associated with IxAccess, all versions of licensing software are backward compatible.

I tried changing the system clock, and now my application won't run, returning a license check failed message. Why is that?

This is because our licensing software has a built in check to protect against license tampering. Reset your system clock back to the proper date and time.

[ top of page ]

How is licensing enforced when I am running Tcl scripts?

If you have the license file located on the chassis then no other steps are needed. However if you are using a license server, then you need to set an environment variable to point the location of that server. See the sections of this FAQ related to your application for details.

[ top of page ]

What will happen if the clock time on my PC is different than the clock time on my chassis?

If there is a time difference between the client PC and the chassis, greater than 24 hours, licensing will not work.  The application which you are attempting to use will not be able to verify the license and will return an error.  You will need to deregister the license(s) on the chassis, make the needed time change, then re-register the license(s).   Be careful not to simply change the clock without deregistering the licenses.  This will cause the license(s) to become invalid.
