Ixia Accelerates NFV Deployments through the Wind River Titanium Cloud Ecosystem

February 17, 2015 by Ixia Blog Team

Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) is a paradigm shift from networking as we know it, moving functions from appliances to software running on x86-based compute platforms. One of the key enablers of this is the “hypervisor,” which provides virtualization of the compute resources. This network transformation can potentially reduce CAPEX and OPEX, as well as accelerate service deployment.

As operators evaluate various hypervisor platforms, the functionality, features, and performance are key to delivering carrier grade services. Many of the hypervisors available lack the right combination of these three key elements and are considered enterprise grade. While the industry is pushing to adopt this technology to enable cloud computing, the features and performance required for telecom network functions delivered at carrier quality is very different from those used in today’s clouds.

Wind River is changing that with their NFV infrastructure software platform, Titanium Server, supported by the Wind River Titanium Cloud ecosystem of validated hardware and software products. Key elements that the Wind River Titanium Server provides include:

  • Carrier grade Linux,
  • KVM based hypervisor with real-time extensions and optimizations for low latency,
  • A carrier grade accelerated vSwitch,
  • Open Stack
  • Carrier grade management and telco middleware

These features provide service providers, TEMs and system integrators with an off-the-shelf carrier grade platform for running services enabled by NFV.

Titanium Server Architecture

Ixia has joined the Titanium Cloud ecosystem, and through this partnership will verify the functionality and performance of their virtual edition test solutions running on Wind River Titanium Server. The Titanium Cloud ecosystem provides a clear benefit to any service providers evaluating platforms for delivering NFV. The validation of interoperability accelerates deployment time and reduces schedule risk.

As networks transition to NFV, this brings about new complexities and challenges around NFV/VNF testing. Through Ixia’s NFV testing solutions, customers can enjoy performance validation and visibility throughout the migration process and deployment life-cycle. Network operators can proceed with migrations, confident of its value and success, and position themselves to profit from change.

Titanium Cloud program members encompass a range of companies representing diverse points within the ecosystem, such as or orchestration, OSS/BSS, VNFs and hardware platforms. Current Titanium Cloud partners include: Artesyn, ASTRI, Brocade, ConteXtream, GENBAND, HP, Intel Security, Ixia, Kontron, Metaswitch Networks, Nakina Systems and Overture. More partners will be announced shortly.
