Will Connected Cars Crash Into the Cloud
Every piece of novel technology is said to have a time and a place. The real question is whether it will have longevity, meaning—will it be successful. Connected car technology is now poised to face this very question. The technology has been talked about since the 1970’s and featured in many movies and television shows. We all remember the tricked-out Aston Martin from the James Bond movies. And don’t forget the Knight Rider KITT car that could, among many other things, talk. It now appears that at least some of the innovative connected car technology is actually ready to hit the marketplace. But will this technology succeed, or will it end up in the garbage heap beside 8-track tapes and LaserDisc videos?
This paper examines issues such as security, reliability, privacy, and legal liability in the context of four key systems within connected cars: core systems, infotainment, application security, and vehicle maintenance.
